News(vol.4)-Apr.2012

A hearty Namaskar and welcome to this fourth report.

Time seems to just fly. I thought I had just begun writing these one page reports to keep all of you posted about happenings and highlights at Sreejan and I realize it has already been 4 months! Thank you for being patient and I would appreciate a few comments or feedback whenever you find time.
First AGM
Please note and mark your calendar……..our first annual general body meeting would be held in Barkheda (30th Sept-2nd October) combined with a 3 day family retreat cum conversations. You have to bring your families and your swimming costumes! Let the fun begin. This would be an important event because some major policy level decisions would have to be taken where participation of ALL members is compulsory. So please
do plan your leave in advance.

THE SHIFT THAT I SEE:
I am very happy. Not because there is a substantial output to show or demonstrate at Barkheda. Our day to day struggles are still the same and we are still taking small baby steps towards our goal but what I see beginning to emerge is a CLEAR SHIFT IN THE ATTITUDE OF OUR SREEJAN KARTAS.

This is a huge achievement in a way. The 5 SIMPLE trainees whom we call Sreejan Karta’s have finally started TRUSTING US and TRUSTING WHAT WE SAY. In short they have started believing in themselves, they kind of know in their heart now that they have this wonderful chance to learn precision farming and ultimately own/lease a one acre piece of land and ACTUALLY free themselves from the cycle of poverty.  So I guess we have succeeded in the first round.

THE CHALLENGE I SEE:
So we have a fair degree of buy in and commitment but we all know that is not enough. The dream is exciting and has begun to lift the energy but the hard journey towards the dream has just begun and the ‘romance’ is beginning to wear out.

CHANGES IN SOCIETY OFFCIE BEARERS:

A few months back we reported that we have registered our society. While we had submitted our papers to the registrar, she came up with some technical objections which we addressed and have once again put up our application.

In the meantime we want to announce a small change in the team. Deepakji stepped down as secretary because he can’t make frequent trips out of Harda. Our new and dashing member Rohit Dhar has graciously accepted the challenge to take charge as secretary. Rohit who lives in Delhi will be visiting Barkheda every month and being a Chartered Accountant would certainly be a great help.  Rajesh Gupta has chosen to be an ordinary member in the new team.

PIPELINE PROJECT
A major mile stone for us at Barkheda has been achieved this month. We have laid a network of 3” dia pipe line all the way from our main water body to almost all the working areas that we intend to utilize. This means enough water is available to our Sreejan Kartas at their door step just by opening up a valve. All year round. This project has cost us more than 4 lacs but every penny spent is well worth it.

OUR ENERGISED TEAM AT BARKHEDA

Santosh (top left) looks after cows. Is our entrepreneur in the making for selling cow dung and cow urine to our internal customers…..and some day to the outside world.
Manoj (top middle) is a trainee farmer from a tribal village. A potential Sreejan Karta.
Ravi (top right) is our site incharge and also responsible for maintaining kitchen garden to ensure we eat locally and fresh.
Bhopali (bottom left) takes care of upcoming nursery to supply plants internally as well as for selling outside. Also doubles up as our local chef.
Sunil (bottom middle) takes care of 2 acres of intensive farming. Hopefully will become first permanent resident of Sreejan very soon.
Bhura (bottom right) takes care of upcoming fruit orchard around our campus and also maintenance of all equipment like tractors, engines etc

REQUEST FOR SPONSORSHIP
Here is a request once again to our members…..please sponsor at least one Sreejan Karta. PLEASE HELP US AND GET TREMENDOUS RETURNS ON YOUR INVESTMENT!! This is how:

What you donate: You pay Rs 60,000 every year for the stipend and upkeep of one SIMPLE trainee. We have promised to pay them a stipend of Rs 3000/3500/4000 pm in the 1st/2nd/3rd year respectively. We would also end up spending about 1200 to 1500 per month in boarding, lodging and misc expenses for every candidate. We also anticipate an additional expenditure of about Rs 500 pm per candidate on their training and exposure visits.

Satisfaction you get:
a) Of mentoring and helping a rural youth so that at the end of 3 years with your help and support at least one rural youth is able to learn how to earn and live with dignity, without leaving his home or village by working on less than 1 acre of land.
b) Of a rural youth connecting with you one on one and bringing to your home some of the fresh and organic produce that he produces once or twice a year
c) Of building a bond between him and you that deepens and flowers into a deep relationship someday where he becomes a good enough reason for you to visit your own land in Barkheda once or twice a year
d) Of building trust and as relationship matures, maybe he could even take care of your land at some point of time in future with a win-win engagement opportunity on both sides

An Appeal
At the moment we have sponsorship for 2 SIMPLE trainees by Dr Vimarsh and Ravi Raina. Our plan is to expand to as many trainees as we can get sponsors for. We wish to have at least 10 to 15 Sreejan Kartas working, living and celebrating their freedom at Barkheda by Dec 2012. Please help us to make your Barkheda Village a thriving and throbbing community.
We have opened a separate bank account with PNB, Nehru Nagar Bhopal just for SIMPLE project so that all the sponsors as well as the trainees can transparently see what is happening with their money. Cheques could be drawn in favor of “Simple-Barkheda”. You could deposit the money in one go or in 4 equal installments of 15,000 each.
